The Importance of Prayer
"So He Himself often withdrew into the
wilderness and prayed."Luke 5:16
Jesus considered prayer more important than food, for the Bible says,
"Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed."(Mark 1:35).
To the Son of God, prayer was more important than the assembling and the healing of great throngs. The Bible says,
"and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by Him of their infirmities. So He Himself often withdrew into the wilderness and prayed."
(Luke 5:15b and 16).
The precious hours of fellowship with His heavenly Father meant much more to
our Saviour than sleep, for the Bible says,
"Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God."(Luke 6:12).
He prayed at funerals, and the dead were raised. He prayed over the five
loaves and the two fishes, and fed a multitude with a little boy's lunch. In His suffering on Calvary's cross He prayed "Father, forgive them, for they do not
know what they do."(Luke 23:34). A way was made whereby sinful man might approach a Holy God.
Many people pray only when they are under great stress, in danger, or facing some crisis.
We are commanded to pray. Paul writes, "I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting."
(I Timothy 2:8). The place and time of prayer are not the most important.
God has moved me to pray many times when I was on my tractor working my fields.
It was such joy, communicating with my Lord. He lifted burdens and gave me
joy and assurance. He wants to do the same for you today.
At WTM the needs are there and we cannot let up. Together as a Board we meet
and list specific needs and bring them before the Lord. It is a great arm of
strength working and praying for each other and for the work of WTM in
particular. I'm involved with Sign Evangelism together with Jake Harder and
our prayer is that these signs will give direction to people who need Christ.
Billy Graham was asked as to the success of his ministry. He replied it is
prayer, prayer and prayer. Together we can make a difference in praying and
expecting God to answer.
