On July 5th Earl and Aggie Klassen of the Cycling Connection, Abbotsford, B.C.,
were joined by five riders and support staff to raise funds for Western Tract
Mission, and Food for the Hungry.
The perfect day began with a devotional in front of the Sugar Shack, in Hague
and ended at The YFC Zone (kindly loaned) in Hague with a barbecue. Foods were
generously donated by The Bigway in Hague, and prepared by Board member,
Ruth Friesen and friends.
This year the route of the second annual Mark Jenkins' Memorial Ride stayed
along the Louis Riel Trail, (formerly the #11 highway). Those cycling the 50 km
ride, went from Hague to the Rosthern Regional Park, where they had a healthy
lunch, and returned to Hague. The riders who had chosen the 100 km ride,
went beyond Duck Lake to a 50 km mark, and were back at the Regional Park to
have lunch with the shorter distance riders, before finishing the return trip.
A soft drizzle cooled them down as they cycled the last few kilometers.
Barb and Doug Jenkins, for whose deceased son this ride was named, participated
again this year. Collin and Jody, two of Mark's four brothers got on their bikes
and joined the other riders. The family was comforted knowing that Mark's
youthful enthusiasm and memory lives on. Barb and Doug stayed with the cyclists
as part of the support team.
Sandra Rempel, Osler, bravely signed up for the ride not knowing how far she
could go. When asked what distances she had ridden in the past, she said, "I
went from Osler to Hague once when I was a teenager." Her husband, John,
followed in case he would have to finish her ride for her. The Rempels were
pleasantly surprised that she could do the 50 km easily. Her husband feels that
next year he should ride as well.
A new kids' Halloween tract, is made possible by the funds raised. It will be
printed and ready for churches and supporters to use this fall. We envision it
having a great impact on both kids and adults for years to come.
