Emily Elliott, the author of Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne, was born at Brighton,
England, on July 22, 1836.She was always a part of the group of people in the
Anglican Church who believed in salvation by faith. She worked tirelessly with
the rescue missions who helped the poor. She also helped in the Sunday Schools.
The words of this song were written for the choir and the school children of
St Mark's, her father's church, in Brighton. She wanted to teach children about
preparing for Christmas and about the birth of Jesus. The words were based on Luke 2:7.
Timothy Richard Matthews composed the music for this hymn with the words in
mind. He was born in Bedford, England on November 4th, 1826. He was known as a
leading organist in Great Britain. He wrote tunes for more than 100 hymns.
