Charles Wesley probably wrote And Can It Be shortly after he gave his life
to the Lord. He saw himself as a prisoner in a dark dungeon and now the Gospel
of Christ seemed to flood the dungeon with light, and set him free from the
sin which seemed to tie him down with chains.
Charles Wesley accepted God's way of salvation on May 20, 1738. He had been
sick. One night at midnight he gave himself up to Christ. For three years he
had been a leader in the Church of England and had just returned from a term as missionary to Georgia. He and his brother John had been called Methodists
because they were very strict with themselves and others who belonged to their
Holy Club at Oxford University. Yet through all this religious activity,
he had not found peace in his heart.
