O Worship the King

Robert Grant (1779-1838)

Robert Grant was born in India. His father was a respected leader and a director of the East India Company. In 1834 Robert was appointed governor of Bombay. Being a strong evangelical Christian he was deeply interested in the missionary outreach of the church. The people of India loved him and named a medical college in his honour.

Twelve of his poems were published in a small volume called Sacred Poems. This was done by his brother Charles after Robert's death.

In 1833 this hymn was published in a hymnal entitled Christian Psalmody. It lists many of the attributes of our God. God is our King, our Shield, our Defender, our Maker, our Redeemer and our Friend. What an avenue of praise to our God!
