8th Annual Walkathon Report June 20, 2009
It was a lovely day for walking, praying, and fellowshipping together, and then rejoicing at our barbeque picnic over the funds raised. Though our numbers were smaller than last year, $7,406 was raised. The most money raised in the eight years in which we've done this!
After opening ceremonies at the Mark Jenkins' memorial tree, and the release of the prayer balloons, the walkers started out along the scenic Meewassin Trail.
Some power-walkers were soon at the head of the pack. Others enjoyed the companionship of others and talked and prayed together as they walked. All along, of course, are beautiful views of the river and the lovely park-like vistas along this Meewasin Trail.
A skeleton crew went ahead to set up the barbecue and sort out who had raised the most funds and earned the prizes. These included Harold Barth and Lynn Moen, who started up and manned the barbecue, preparing some very fine smoked sausages. Ruth Friesen and Lynn Moen also sorted through the pledge sheets and envelopes of money to determine how much was raised, and by whom.
When the walkers reached the Mendel Art Gallery they crossed the road into Kinsmen Park and were rewarded with cold drinks and the excellent barbecued sausages on a bun, a great memorial cake and watermelon.
Director, Arnold Stobbe had the pleasure of handing out prizes to all who had participated this year. This included some brand new Scripture Signs that were framed by Board member, Allen Martens.
Priscilla Blackmore won first pick and chose the matched pair of moonlight pictures. Carolyn Loewen, a Board member, won second place.
Each fund-raising walker, when called up, could take their choice of the prizes. These included some gift certificates, and a flight over Saskatoon.
(That prize made the Derksen boys very happy). In the end, everyone of the twelve walkers who brought in funds was given something.
What makes this walkathon such a success is that the monies allow us now to have the new Impact Canada booklet printed (100,000) and to mail it out as bulk mail to blanket almost all the addresses left in Saskatchewan, not covered by our mailing in September of 2007, and in March of this year. We have even produced a brand new booklet with new testimonies. It is called, "Inner Peace Factor."
Please pray that it will bear lasting spiritual fruit for time and eternity.
