The Walk-Jog-Pray Walkathon
of June 19, 2010

The participants in this year's walkathon 2010

The participants this year, except for Doug Jenkins, the photographer.

We were glad for a good turn-out for the Walkathon, on the Saturday of Father's Day weekend. There is something invigorating in walking about an hour and a half along the scenic Meewasin Trail, which follows the Saskatchewan River on the east side of Spadina Crescent.

The Walkathon began at the Mark Jenkins' memorial tree with a short memorial service of a reading by Barb Jenkins, the lighting of the candle, and the invocational prayer by our Director, Arnold Stobbe. There is always a group photo, and then off the walkers go. Some in twos and threes, and some alone. Each one is wearing an identifying name tag with a prayer list on the back.

Some designated people head back to the Kinsmen Park to set up the picnic barbecue to make sure it is ready as the walkers arrive. The picnic meal consisted of tasty barbecued sausages on a bun, watermelon, and the cake in memory of Mark Jenkins.

When it appeared that we were only $10 short of $6000, various additions to the funds were made, and we went over that amount. (Since then, more has come into the office so now the total is $8,425!) Our strong Director, Arnold Stobbe, always seems to raise more funds than anyone else. (He has a lot of friends and contacts). But he allows the others to have their turns first at choosing the prizes. Priscilla Blackmore got that honour, and chose the handsome picture of a lion made of tiny bits of straw.

Others who claimed prizes were Pete and Susan Buhler, Wayne Berg, Barb Jenkins, Linda Porter and Betty Eidse.

Arnold auctioning off the watermelon After, when there were two and a half watermelon left over, and some buns, Arnold auctioned them off to the highest bidders.

Cleanup happened quickly, and everyone was able to go on to their own activities just as the sun came out to shine almost too hot for such a walk. The Lord has been gracious to give us a good day for our Walkathon each year so far.

The response for both fund raisers, the Music/Dessert Night in April and this Walkathon on June 19 brought in sufficient funds for our next Impact Canada mailing which is to go out to the last three postal codes in Saskatchewan that had not been covered yet; S0K, S0M, and S0G. These are located in the Saskatchewan Valley area north of the city of Saskatoon, with 80,000 homes.
