Chapter X
Thy Mercies are New Every Morning
"In Thee, O Lord, do I put my trust." Psalm 71:1
Less than two years ago, a dear friend of mine went "Home." It had been her great privilege the last year of her life to take a firm stand for the truth. It was when many christians, the world over, were shocked and grieved when those of liberal beliefs, came out into the open, told the views they had held for years and insisted on teaching and preaching them.
Dear Jessie Warren, "stood up and was counted" so to speak. She was deeply saddened but ready to suffer for righteousness' sake. She did, because she was convinced she could no longer attend the church she had worked in for years.
She suffered because her husband, whom she dearly loved, did not see eye to eye with her at first. She told me it broke her heart to see him going off to church alone and she told him she could not put anything before her God. She prayed earnestly and God answered. They both came out from that denomination and found a church where sound doctrine was preached. I relate this in her memory.
Driving on the highway with two Christian friends, a car speeding by us, sideswiped our car. The impact was so forceful, it sent the other car across the median and it turned right about in a circle. Had it gone another foot it would have been in the north bound traffic.
The force flung open the door on the far side of our car. Mrs. S... almost fell out. In memory I still see the terrified look on her face. She had been sitting sideways, talking to me, with her arm on the back of the seat. She gripped it hard.
A few minutes later, she said, "This is the first time you have driven with us and sat in the rear seat. You always sat in the front, looking straight ahead. Had you been there this time, you would have gone out."
When we start a journey, we ask and trust God to take us without mishap. Then we thank Him because He did. When something like this happens, it is driven home to us, how much He does protect us.
Some years ago a surgeon told me I needed surgery. In the next breath, almost, he said my heart was so bad that if I didn't rest I should die.
I had no intention of acting on the advice of one physician. I went to one of our large hospitals and spoke to a supervisor and a doctor, asking if they would give me a list of surgeons.
The doctor gave me the list, saying, "I don't know how you will choose." I replied, "I know."
I took my problem to the Lord, asking Him to direct me to the right doctor. In the morning I wakened with these words, "See Dr. F..." I had never consulted Dr. F... but I had met him. I did not know he was a heart specialist.
I made an appointment and had a thorough examination. Then he said, "I am absolutely against an operation for you. What that doctor says is true, but it is secondary. Never, never let anyone operate on you except as a last resource."
He took my case and later on saved me from surgery again. Oh, our Heavenly Father never fails us.
One day I was about to read a book that had been lent to me. Having reason to believe it upheld liberal views on theology, I said, "Dear Lord, protect me from any evil in this book," My hand automatically picked up my Bible and it opened to these words, "Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it." Deuteronomy 4:2.
In 1962, this Senior Citizen's apartment building became my home. We could not choose our apartment so I asked the Lord to choose for me and for all who were coming here. Some have not been contented, many have. From the very first my heart has been filled with thankfulness for a spacious, sunny, comfortable room, looking out on a nice park. "A Quiet Resting Place" He did find for me.
I could not take the time nor space to recount all the wonderful blessings God has showered upon me. Christian friendships have been made. I thank God for the rich fellowship He has given me with His children. I believe, when each morning, we give our day over to His directive care and ask that we would not miss an opportunity to serve Him, that He does lead us. One of the dear friends the Lord brought into my life has gone to be with Him in glory. Dear Ruby Braithwaite, the Lord used us together to His honor and glory.
Another friend, too young to be in this building, would state with me, that God directed our meeting. Elsie Basnett and I had a rich spiritual fellowship.
