Chapter XIII
Go and Tell
"Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord." Zechariah 6:4.
I wish the stories in this book were ones of winning precious souls to Christ, in answer to prayer, but they are not.
There is a comforting word "Helps" in 1 Corinthians 12. It has been said, to no one individual has God given the privilege of leading some one to accept the Saviour. There may be a few. Each one of us is a link in a chain which goes back to grandparents, parents, other members of the family, friends, teachers, employers, employees, up to a particular time the Holy Spirit uses, perhaps an evangelist or pastor or another, under whose preaching or teaching the decision is made.
In Acts 27:17, we read about the storm and the ship in which Paul was being taken to Rome. They used "helps" to undergird the ship. That is to help strengthen the ship.
Many Christians may not be called upon to be in the front lines, but it is their part to hold up the hands of others in various ways. Galatians 6:1-2, "Bear ye one another's burdens." 2 Corinthians 1:4, "Comfort them who are in any trouble by the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted of God." Matthew 10:42, "A cup of cold water." Matthew 25:40. 1 Corinthians 12:14-31. 2 Thessalonians 3:2. 1 Thessalonians 5:25, and many other commands in the Scriptures. 1 Samuel 30:1-25, Luke 6:38.
As we read about and listen to the great need of the gospel in other lands, our hearts are stirred or should be.
We cannot all go to the mission fields but we can help. Psalm 68:11-12. Prayer is much needed to strengthen those on the fields; the discouraged, lonely and ones going through great tribulation. If we earnestly desire to be used the Lord will bring to our attention many people and projects for which we can pray. In Exodus 17, we read the story of Aaron and Hur holding up the hands of Moses, and how he weakened when they failed in their task. It is a joy and a responsibility for the child
of God.
There is an incident that has occurred to me several times while writing these stories. I held back from relating it. Today I am impressed strongly to do so, as it might encourage some one who is being deterred from answering the call of duty.
There was a class of boys in Sunday School, six of them, about fourteen years old. They did not have a steady teacher. One would try it once. Another, for two or three Sundays. The boys had proven unmanageable. Yet they were not bad boys, just difficult.
I was staying with my sister. The first time I went to Sunday School, the superintendent asked me to teach them. I refused.
Then as I watched them without a teacher, the Holy Spirit showed me what I must do, so I went to them.
It was a rewarding work. I never enjoyed teaching more. I had no trouble with them and some of them visited me during the week. I taught them two years.
In later years one visited me at my home. Another met my father in Boston and spoke of me in a way for which I thank God. "To God be the glory." Psalm 115:1. I saw a third one a few years ago, not long before he went to be with the Lord. It was a spiritual uplift to look at his radiant countenance as he testified of his salvation, through the Blood of Jesus, shed for him.
Through the years that class has been a precious memory of the great privilege God had given me to work in His service. He had used me as a "Help." So to others, who are hesitating for one reason or another, about accepting a task for the Lord, I say, "If you hear the call, answer it, 'Here am I, Lord, send me.'" Isaiah 6:8.
Do not go forward in your own strength, but in the strength of the Lord, seeking His aid and counsel all the way.
"Jesus calls us o'er tumult of our life's wild, restless sea,
Day by day His sweet voice soundeth, saying 'Christian follow me'." C.F.A.
