I Know God Answers Prayer - by Ada Welch

Chapter III

Garments of Praise

"According to His Will" 1 John 5:14.

When eighteen a very serious illness brought me to death's door. There were two church conferences being held at the same time in the town. At both, a prayer service was held for my recovery. God answered prayer and restored me to health. My parents attended one of them. Later my mother told me about it.

There was one man, a stranger, whose prayer had been outstanding. He believed and thanked God for my healing. You may say, "What is remarkable about that? Many have been healed."

Forty years later, my older sister went to hear a visiting minister. After the service she spoke to him and told him her father was Rev. W. J. Hamilton. He looked at her and said, "Rev. W. J. Hamilton. Forty years ago they held a prayer service for the healing of his daughter. Are you that daughter?" She replied, "No, it was my sister."

That prayer service and God in His exceeding kindness restoring me to health, had always been of great import to me. Then hearing this story from my sister, made it more interesting. That a stranger should remember that meeting for forty years, even the name, was unusual. I wonder if he were the one who made the earnest plea for my healing.

Once I read that the great Charles Finney remarked that when he was praying for someone, he received while praying, the assurance of their healing, or that they would not be healed. Our Heavenly Father would have us live on such intimate terms with Him.

That severe illness and subsequent healing brought a definite, deep, spiritual experience to me. I don't see how anyone can be so near death and ever be the same again. For a long time the memory of that sickness stayed with me. I was unconscious for weeks.

When home again, I can still remember the family prayers and my dear father thanking God for giving me back to them. My sister, six years old, would sob as she had done for weeks. There was a close bond between us and she would snuggle up to me, hold me tightly and weep. It was a happy reunion. I was loved and loved them. As I think back, I thank God, as I do daily, for that loving Christian home, and I grieve for multitudes of children today who do not have that relationship.

And He said unto them, "Follow Me."

Though, before that illness, I had been desirous to serve the Lord, teaching and burdened for the unsaved, a deeper desire came into my heart. The realization came that God had a plan, a purpose and a place for me. In His goodness, sparing my life, He was calling me to a closer fellowship. The reading of God's Word was of more value. Two books I remember reading were, "Imitations of Christ" by Thomas A. Kempes and "The Three-Fold Secret of the Holy Spirit" by J. H. McConkey. The latter, the Holy Spirit definitely used on my behalf. I came to the consecration pledge. I well remember the convicting power of the Holy Spirit. As, when a child I resisted saying to myself, "Why sign? I intend to carry this out anyway." The answer came back, "If you intend to anyway, why hesitate to sign?" How Satan tries to hinder! There was quite a struggle, then after a few days, down on my knees, known only to God, I yielded.

Romans 12:1 says, "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service." Yes, it is only reasonable. We are bought with a price, the price of the blood of Christ. We are not our own.

Many times since I have failed my loving Saviour to my sorrow, but He has never failed me. He has kept His hand upon me all these years. How I thank Him and praise Him! He is the great Gardener. We are the gardens to be weeded and pruned. The true gardener has much work to do and so does the Master Gardener, bringing His child into line with His will.
